Let’s just start by saying it wouldn’t be a dirty weekend without a bit of mud…
Or some unconventional positions…
Or someone showing off the size of their tool (sorrynotsorry)
Puns aside… the Dirty Weekenders made PLENTY of discoveries…
Starting over in the iron age roundhouse…
… there was this big bone
A clothing toggle
Great big chunks of salt storage pots (a.k.a VCP)
Plus this beautiful mesolithic stone blade
Meanwhile in the trenches by the chapel…
There’s ceramics, bone and even shell…
A nice bit of pig jaw
Plus the rim of a hammerhead mortarium (used for grinding herbs)
In fact, from Samian Ware to Black Burnished Ware, the Dirty Weekenders turned up all sorts of ceramics
We can’t pretend it wasn’t hard work
But that just made teabreak in the sun all the more rewarding
There were plenty of jokes (quick, the site director’s coming… act natural!)
And if anyone taught us anything, it was to remember that “where there’s charcoal, there’s hope”
Dare we say it… from mesolithic mud to Roman ruins… this Dirty Weekend was bucketloads of fun!
