Dirty Weekends – good clean fun

If there’s a better way to unwind after a hard week at the office, we’ll eat our hats!

Check our Dig Calendar for our upcoming digs.

Dirty Weekends are two days of action-packed archaeology, led by experts on some of the UK’s most exciting sites. Each one starts with an archaeological briefing on Saturday at 9am. You’ll then have two whole days on Saturday and Sunday to excavate alongside professional archaeologists, and find out as much as you can about events that transpired thousands of years ago.

Investigate a Neolithic monument? Find a long-lost Anglo-Saxon monastery? Explore an Iron Age tower? No previous archaeological experience is necessary to join our digs! We’ll bring the tools, the expertise and the commitment to teach you everything you want to learn – you just bring yourself, a desire to learn and have fun… Oh, and maybe some PJs!

Anyone can join any DigVentures excavation by crowdfunding one of our projects on our Projects page.

Dirty Weekends are something a little bit different, a little bit ‘extra’. They’re a special event that takes place, usually at a brand new excavation site, and are designed to give people a 48-hour taster of archaeology.

In 2017, our Dirty Weekend is taking place September 30th – 1st October in Scotland, at Coldingham Priory. You can click here for details.

Accommodation and other specifics will vary from site to site, but one thing is certain: it will be a weekend you’ll never forget!

What will we be doing?

You really do get to be an archaeologist for the weekend! Each Dirty Weekend starts with an archaeological briefing at 9am. You’ll then have two days to excavate alongside professional archaeologists, and try out a range of other archaeological activities – each tailored to the site you’re working on.

Who will we be digging with?

As well as other Dirty Weekenders, you will be digging alongside an expert team from your chosen site, as well as DigVentures’ own professional archaeologists.

Our groups are small and friendly, and places are limited to make sure that each Dirty Weekend is a unique experience and that you get the full attention of our team. It’s best to book early to avoid disappointment.

What’s the schedule like?

Each day starts at 9am, and finishes at 5pm, with plenty of breaks amidst all the archaeological excitement. We usually head to the pub on the Saturday evening to discuss the day’s findings together.

What do the costs cover?

The costs cover everything archaeology related (including all tuition, specialist sessions and conservation and analysis of the finds), plus light refreshments and a DigVentures t-shirt. Book for two using the ‘Friends with Benefits’ option to get a 20% discount!

Please note that Dirty Weekend purchases do not include travel, accommodation or meals. Arrangements vary from site to site, so please check the individual Dirty Weekend pages for full details. Please read our Terms and Conditions for further information.

What should we bring?

Generally speaking, all you need to bring is a packed lunch and appropriate clothing… oh, and bags of enthusiasm! But we will send you more information about any specifics once you book.

Who are Dirty Weekends suitable for?

Age: Participants must be 17 years of age or older to join the dig. Minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian who is also a registered participant. If you would like to book a dig experience for a child, have a look at our awesome DigCamp!

People with Disabilities: We strive to do our best to ensure everyone has a chance to experience archaeology, and have worked with many differently-abled participants on our sites. We are very happy to discuss special accommodations on a case-by-case basis and do whatever we can to ensure a safe and exciting experience for everyone. Please notify us before booking of any disabilities so that we can discuss options for participation.

Experience: No previous experience is necessary! Dirty Weekends are perfect if you’re looking for something new to do and we’ll teach you everything you need to know. But if you do have previous digging experiences, you can be sure that every Dirty Weekend will present you with a brand new archaeological challenge – every site is different after all!

Are Dirty Weekends flexible?

Your Dirty Weekend experience is intended to be used for the specific site you select, however we understand that sometimes, plans have to be changed! If you select a dig and then can’t make it, just let us know as soon as possible and we can transfer the booking for a Dirty Weekend experience on another DigVentures site within one year from the date of purchase.

What about Gift Certificates?

Yup, you can book a Dirty Weekend Gift Certificate through our Dig Experience Gift Certificates page and decide which Dirty Weekend to join later. Your Dirty Weekend Gift Certificate will be valid on any Dirty Weekend within one year from purchase.

When you buy a Gift Certificate, we’ll sign you up to DigMail (our newsletter) so that you get information about dig availability as soon as it is released. If you have purchased the dig as a gift, we’ll add you and the recipient after checking with you if that’s ok (we wouldn’t want to give away the surprise now would we!?).
