Filmed on real excavations, with real archaeologists, ‘Why We Dig’ is archaeology as you’ve never seen it before.
This brand-new series brings the world of archaeology to the screen: the discoveries, the drama, and most importantly the stories of the people who do the dirty work – the archaeologists themselves. It’s archaeology for the Netflix generation!
“For years, our community has been saying ‘you guys should have a proper series!’ and now we’re finally doing it” says Lisa Westcott Wilkins, co-founder of DigVentures.
Season 1, which will be released this summer, was filmed on excavations at Lindisfarne – the small island off the Northumbrian coast, which is well-known from historical sources as being the home of the famous early medieval monastery raided by Vikings in AD 793.
“The official trailer is ready to watch, episode 1 is nearly complete, and the next three episodes are already underway. All of this work is subscriber-supported and, with enough subscribers supporting our vision, we’ll be able to send the camera crew back out into the field to produce a brand new series every season” she continues.
“Our goal is to create something that’s different from all the archaeology programmes that have gone before. We don’t want to mimic, rehash, reheat, or force archaeology into a contrived format. Our goal is to produce something filled with DV’s unique energy and enthusiasm, that gives the archaeology – and a new generation of archaeologists – a proper chance to be seen and heard. Because we believe that great archaeology is worth sharing in a way that everyone can enjoy. We’re excited to see what people think” says Lisa.
