How To… Celebrate Like An Archaeologist

Archaeologists know a thing or two about celebrating; after all, no dig is complete without an ‘End Of Site Party’.

If you think a beer feels good after a hard day’s work, then just imagine what it’s like to gather together all of the people who have spent the last few weeks working hard (physically and mentally) to learn about archaeology and help you make some incredible discoveries. Believe us – it feels good…

Now imagine what celebrating four years of brilliant excavations feels like; four times as good probably doesn’t even come close to describing it!

Yes, today is DigVentures’ fourth birthday, and over the last four years we’ve had plenty to celebrate, and plenty of great people to celebrate it all with. Trying to express how fabulous all this archaeology feels is pretty tough, but it’s basically a GREAT excuse to raid our photo albums and share some of the best moments from our end of site parties. It’s like our dream party, made out of parties we’ve actually had. Get ready, because this is how archaeologists like to celebrate…

It all starts with the shout of ‘That’s it folks! Tools down’…

And then everyone will gather together (including the dog)

There’ll be a feast of epic proportions…

And (of course) some rather excellent costumes…

No doubt there’ll be a clash with AT LEAST two other people wearing the same Mick Aston-inspired stripey jumper as you…

 There might even be a Stonehenge-shaped bouncy castle

Once the sun’s gone down, it’ll be time to gather the troops…

And find a suitable venue to continue the party indoors (this reconstructed roundhouse will do nicely, thank you)…

A few pub quiz questions will loosen everybody up (go team The Pits)…

And the master of ceremonies (yes, that’s Lisa there on the right) will summon a little bit of music from DJ Brendopolis…

There’ll be plenty of archaeology-inspired dance moves… (we call these two ‘the trench inspection’ and ‘double-handed mattock’)

And it will occur to at least one person that ‘hey! just because we didn’t find a real pyramid, doesn’t mean we can’t build our own’…

Someone will surely start a game of hide and seek behind the LandRover…

And one of the millenials will get out the Leveling Staff to initiate a game of limbo…

Of course, there will also be some impressive party tricks

EVERYONE will want a go on the star-shaped sunglasses…

And at the end of the night, we’ll all still be smiling (or pouting?)…

And all that will be left the next day will be the not-quite-archaeological evidence that we all had a jolly good time (and you don’t need to be an archaeologist to work out what we mean by that!)
