Venturer profile: Suzanne Brown

“I’ve been digging as an amateur archaeologist for about 10 years now – using annual leave from my full-time job and digging at weekends with my local society. During that time my interest in archaeology has grown, and in 2005 I took the plunge and started a BA in History and Archaeology which I completed in 2009. Not content with one degree, I recently started my MA and hope to complete in 2014.

I’ve had lots of exciting opportunities over the years digging in the vicus at Vindolanda, excavating a villa and bath house at Barcombe (Sussex), digging with UNAS at Piddington Roman Villa and excavating various sites (mostly Roman and Tudor) through Enfield Archaeological Society. I’ve even had the opportunity to dig with Time Team when they excavated two villas at Withington!

I’m a newbie when it comes to Bronze Age sites (as you can see my bias is definitely towards Roman!) so the opportunity to dig at Flag Fen was something I wasn’t going to miss. Sites like Flag Fen don’t come up every day and to be able to dig, and help fund the dig at the same time, seemed like a great idea.  I’m really looking forward to getting stuck in and, of course, the end of site party!! :O)”
