Unearthing the lost history of this small tidal island
Lindisfarne is no ordinary archaeological site; raided by Vikings in AD 793, it is one of the most iconic in Britain. This is where the Kings of Northumbria established an important religious centre, where monks created the Lindisfarne Gospels, and where skilled artisans forged the treasures that adorned the altars of early Medieval Europe. It’s also where Vikings launched a series of devastating raids in the 8th, 9th and 10th centuries.
As a result, the early medieval monastery that once stood here was left to ruin: its original location, along with many of its stories, were lost to time. Aside from monks and kings, who lived here? What were their lives like? And how did they survive the Viking raids?
