Barnard Castle

Local residents are helping DigVentures to find out what's buried in the castle's outer ward.

What’s buried under Barnard Castle? Archaeologists are on a mission to find out what’s buried under the castle’s Outer Ward, and we’re inviting local residents to join in.

Adults and children can join us on an archaeological dig, take a guided tour, or share in the discoveries through other activities, including a pop-up museum, hands-on artefacts classes, community workshops, and more.

What are we looking for?

Barnard Castle has been under the guardianship of English Heritage since 1984, and has a rich medieval history.

Built by the Balliol family following the Norman conquest before being bestowed to the Earls of Warrick, and later the soon-to-be King Richard III. Now, the dramatic ruins of this impressive castle stand above the river Tees, drawing many visitors to the town.

But it’s what’s outside the main castle that interests us most: the Outer Ward. And this is where we’ll be digging!

The Outer Ward is one of four wards surrounding the castle – which encompassed both the keep and the town – and would once have contained a medieval church, farm buildings and the gate-tower which controlled access to and from the main town.

Will we find any of these lost medieval structures? And what else might be found? That’s what we hope YOU can help us find out!

About the bigger project

The excavation forms part of a pilot project funded by Historic England and led by the Cultura Trust in partnership with landowner the Raby Estates, to investigate the Outer Ward and bring it back into public use, alongside the regeneration of other disused buildings along Barnard Castle’s high street for use by community and heritage organisations.

The first part of this project aims to reveal what history still lies buried beneath Barnard Castle, a question that can only be answered through archaeological excavation…

Alongside these events, DigVentures is gathering baseline information to help the Cultura Trust and Raby Estates understand how residents would like the site to be used, and which heritage activities can form part of a longer-term programme that benefits the local community.
