That's a wrap!
After two weeks, our dig at Soulton is done! We’ve uncovered some amazing archaeology which has helped us piece together the full story of this iconic monument through the ages.
From it’s initial construction, to it’s eventual landscaping, the evidence you’ve helped us uncover is vital to understanding the full narrative. Thank you so much to all of our crowdfunders who made this possible, whether you joined us online or in the field.
Recording, recording, recording...
One of the most important things in archaeology is making sure you’ve got good records of everything you’ve uncovered. Archaeology is a destructive process, so we like to keep creating fresh records as we go, but as we head into the final countdown it’s extra important to make sure everything is wrapped up.
The team will be busy today drawing and photographing these trenches before the day is over.
Do two stones make a wall?
What’s this curious find we’ve uncovered on the east of the mound? Could this be some more of the retaining wall we’ve found previously? Are archaeologists always doomed to find something exciting on the last day of every dig?

Feeling peckish?

Chris finds some pottery
The finds are starting early today! Chris has already uncovered some pottery while excavating the mound.

The folks in the Finds Room have had another visitor today! Archaeologist Rob Hedge has come along to talk a bit about pottery – one of the most common archaeological bulk finds on medieval sites.
Rob’s work as a finds specialist means he has some incredible knowledge about pottery types, which he’s been kind enough to share with us!
Nigel finds some pottery
Nigel has uncovered a lovely pottery sherd. It’s great to see so many artefacts still emerging as we near the end of the dig!
Return of the nails
Missing those nails? We bet you were. Good news, there’s plenty more coming! Here’s a few from today, found by Jo and Jenny.
All these nails are evidence of that timber structure on top of the mound that was pushed over during landscaping in the post-medieval period.
