A pit is a ‘negative’ feature or one that is represented by a depression in the ground.

There are many types of features that can be called pits and they may also be a component part of another monument.
Pit features, especially shallower ones, become obscured over time through erosion, soil development, vegetation growth and agricultural activity.
Some of the pit forms may be found in association with or are part of other monuments listed elsewhere in this guide, e.g. industrial sites. It is best to identify the most specific form of pit where possible.
What to look for:
- Negative features in the landscape which cannot be defined more precisely
