Earthworks are some of the earliest monuments that are found in Britain and the use of earth in construction continues to the modern period. Essentially these are banks, ditches and mounds but the word ‘earthwork’ covers a wide variety of monument types including: building platforms, barrows, mottes, hillforts etc. They are hugely variable in form and size, from small mounds measuring a meter across to very large structures tens of meters high.
This monument type will be used when a more specific type cannot be assigned.
What to look for:
- Change in terrain that doesn’t look to be part of the natural landscape
