We knew the sunshine couldn’t last forever. The rain started yesterday and continued to hammer against our tents all through the night, leaving us with one wet trench in the morning. Instead of wading through the muddy waters, we spent the morning learning how to plan sections, use dumpy levels and complete beautiful drawings to Raksha and Kerry’s high standards!

When the rain decided to disappear and the trench dried out a little, we cleared back the layer of mud that had accumulated overnight so that the trench is squeaky clean ready for planning the features tomorrow using our new skills. The rain actually really helped bring out the features more clearly so we could really see what is going on – so it wasn’t all bad!

We also had a surprise visit today from Helen Geake. Helen came and helped us identify a beautiful brass artefact brought in to us from a neighbour, who’s family had found it in the field next to the Abbey about 40 years ago. Unfortunately Helen told us it wasn’t medieval, but probably just made to look that way – nevertheless, it was great to hear from our neighbours and for us to help identify this object for them.

Tomorrow we plan the top of Trench One, start to dig into the features and open up some more features! What will this show us? Stay tuned…
