Coastal Archaeology Under Climate Threat: Purbeck and Studland

Parts of Dorset’s Jurassic Coast are disappearing. Coastal erosion is reshaping the shoreline faster than traditional surveying can keep pace with. And at £1,000 per hectare, conventional survey methods were simply too expensive to cover the scale the National Trust required.

From 1,040 applicants across 31 countries, 743 participants (known as Pastronauts) completed their training, and got to work, mapping heritage features from satellite imagery and LiDAR data. This became Deep Time’s most international mission, with a genuinely global community coming together around one vulnerable stretch of English coastline.

The Landscape

Purbeck and Studland occupy one of the most geologically dramatic stretches of the English coast, as limestone cliffs give way to lowland heath and chalk grassland, and Studland’s beaches curve toward the mouth of Poole Harbour. The landscape is layered with human history, from Iron Age hillforts to medieval Corfe Castle, with wartime defences and ancient field systems now crumbling at the cliff edge.

This coastline is changing fast, with rising sea levels and accelerating erosion reshaping the shoreline in ways that are difficult to track, and impossible to reverse. What our Pastronauts mapped here isn’t just a record of what exists, but rather a record of what the sea will eventually claim.

What did we discover?

Our Pastronauts identified 2,887 heritage features across the Purbeck and Studland coastline – a 367% increase on the 767 previously held in the National Trust’s Historic Buildings, Sites and Monuments Record. For a landscape being actively reshaped by erosion, that’s not just an impressive number, but a record of things that may not survive long enough to be counted any other way.


What did people say?

42% of participants reported stronger bonds with their home landscapes, and 71% developed enhanced connections to Purbeck and Studland specifically – remarkable given that most were mapping remotely from around the world.


How accurate was the data?

The citizen-generated data achieved an average accuracy score of 87.34%, an improvement on the existing record’s 83.2%, and the improvement appeared across the whole dataset, and not just in the best examples.


Who took part?

743 Pastronauts completed training from a pool of 1,040 applicants spanning 31 countries. The community was diverse in age, gender, and background – many with no prior experience of archaeology. This was Deep Time’s most international cohort, demonstrating that meaningful heritage work can happen anywhere with the right tools and training.


What happened to the data?

The validated dataset was shared with the National Trust to inform how they manage the Purbeck and Studland coastline going forward. For a landscape being actively reshaped by erosion, having a detailed record of what exists now is genuinely valuable for documenting features that may not survive the next few decades, as the shoreline continues to change.
