Rapid Coastal Monitoring: Northumberland Coast National Landscape

Citizen scientists map a changing coastline, proving that community data can outperform AI and professional surveys.

Along the Northumberland Coast, climate change is shifting habitat boundaries faster than conventional monitoring methods can keep up with. Professional surveys were also too costly to cover a landscape this ecologically complex. This meant that the Northumberland Coast National Landscape needed a better approach.

For the final mission of the Citizen Science Local Pilots project, our participants (known as Futurenauts) provided one.

From 1,208 applicants, a cohort of Futurenauts and 41 mission leaders used Deep Time’s mapping platform to document 16 habitat types across 593 km² of coastline in just four weeks.

The Landscape

The Northumberland Coast is one of England’s least developed stretches of shoreline, dramatic, relatively quiet, and ecologically varied in a way that’s easy to underestimate from a distance. From the Aln and Coquet estuaries to the sweep of beach beneath Bamburgh Castle, the coastline compresses sand dunes, saltmarsh, rocky shore, farmland and woodland into a narrow strip that supports an unusually wide range of habitats.

However, climate change is putting that variety under pressure. Shifting weather, rising seas and changing land use are altering habitat boundaries in ways that are hard to monitor using conventional methods. The Northumberland Coast National Landscape needed a clear picture of what exists right now, as the baseline against which everything that follows can be understood

What did we discover?

Our Futurenauts and 41 mission leaders mapped over 12,364 habitat polygons across 593 km² in just four weeks.


How accurate was the data?

82% of citizen-mapped grids proved as accurate as (or better than) professional ecological surveys and AI-generated mapping – the strongest accuracy result across the Citizen Science Local Pilots programme. It also showed that well-trained citizen scientists can consistently match or exceed professional data quality, even in complex coastal environments with overlapping habitat types.


How did it change people?

Many participants reported feeling more connected to the Northumberland coastline after taking part, including people who wouldn’t have described themselves as particularly comfortable with technology before they started, suggesting that the barrier to meaningful environmental engagement isn’t expertise, but instead access and purpose.


What happened to the data?

The habitat mapping data was shared with the Northumberland Coast National Landscape to support their ongoing conservation work and establish the ecological baseline they’ll need to track how climate change reshapes this coastline over time. In a landscape where the boundaries between habitats are already shifting, knowing exactly what exists now is a crucial starting point.
