Take Part

Anyone can take part, from anywhere in the world. Deep Time is an opportunity to learn, explore, and discover. It is open to anyone who wants to make a difference, has access to an internet-enabled device, and the time and curiosity to give it a go.

You do not need any prior knowledge or experience – we will teach you everything you need to know.

All you need is:

• Time
• Curiosity
• Laptop or tablet with internet connection

It also helps if you want to:

• Do something positive
• Learn something new
• Be part of a collective effort and collaborate with others

Training usually takes 4-8 hours and is entirely online. You can complete each lesson at your own pace and in your own time.

In the training, you will learn about:

• Different types of mapping and Earth Observation data (such as satellite and LiDAR imagery)
• How to search, record, and validate your discoveries
• Collaborating with your fellow Futurenauts or Pastronauts for maximum accuracy (and enjoyment!)
• How our discoveries will make a difference

There’s also plenty of help and support, including:

• Online guides
• Quizzes to test yourself
• A ‘sandbox’ to practice in before you start a real mission
• A live chat offering lots of help and encouragement!
• Optional extra live tutorials (any live tutorials will be recorded and available to replay)

Once you complete training, you can join whichever mission is currently running.

And remember – don’t worry if you don’t have experience, or aren’t sure if you know enough – we will teach you everything you need to know!

Each mission covers a different landscape, which is broken down into searchable grid squares.

It usually takes 1-2 hours to complete a single grid square, but this can vary depending on the mission and what you are looking for.

Most people complete 2-4 grid squares per mission, but you can complete as many or as few grid squares as you have time for.

Just think – in the time it takes to watch a film, you could contribute an entire grid square to help complete mission!

Each mission has two stages:

• Stage 1: Search – select a grid square, search it, and mark your discoveries as you go

Once all grid squares have been searched, we begin Stage 2.

• Stage 2: Validation – select a grid square that someone else has searched, and say whether you agree with their findings

Both stages are really fun – from the thrill of discovery in stage 1, to the curiosity of seeing what others have found in stage 2.
