Heritage and Peatland Recovery: Peak District

Protecting archaeology beneath 10,000 hectares of damaged peatland as the National Trust repairs a vital carbon sink.

The National Trust is working to restore 10,000 hectares of damaged peatland in the Peak District, gradually bringing landscapes that release carbon back into the functioning “carbon sinks” they should be, rather than carbon sources. But before that restoration work could begin across 123 km², they needed to understand what was hidden below.

Our participants (known as Pastronauts) used LiDAR and satellite imagery to map what was there, giving the Trust the knowledge they needed to restore the landscape, without losing the archaeology it had protected for centuries.

The Landscape

The Peak District’s high moorlands are among the most important peatland landscapes in England. Formed over thousands of years, these deep peat deposits store vast quantities of carbon and support distinctive upland ecology. But centuries of drainage, overgrazing and atmospheric pollution have left much of this peatland damaged, drying out, eroding and releasing carbon, rather than capturing it.

Beneath the peat lies a rich archaeological record of prehistoric communities that lived and worked across these uplands, leaving traces that are invisible from the surface, but revealed in stunning detail by LiDAR. Understanding where these features sit is essential, not just for heritage protection, but because archaeological remains can influence how peatland restoration is designed and where it can safely proceed.

 

What did we discover?

Our Pastronauts added 3,436 features to the 2,208 already on record, more than doubling the number of identified archaeological sites within the National Trust area. Of those, 2,341 were entirely new discoveries, giving the Trust and the National Park a fundamentally richer picture of what lies beneath the peatland.


How accurate was the data?

Volunteer-generated data scored an average quality rating of 84%well ahead of the existing Historic Buildings, Sites and Monuments Record’s 72%, making the Pastronaut-generated data both larger and more reliable than what had existed before.


What happened to the data?

The validated dataset now informs the National Trust’s peatland restoration programme across the Peak District, helping to ensure that repair work to 10,000 hectares of damaged peatland can go ahead, with a clear picture of the archaeology beneath. It’s the kind of data that lets the Trust pursue climate action and heritage protection together, rather than having to choose between them.


Why does peatland archaeology matter?

Peatlands are both carbon stores and archaeological archives. The waterlogged, acidic conditions preserve organic remains that would decay in other soils – wooden structures, leather, textiles, and even human remains spanning thousands of years. Restoring peatland hydrology is essential for climate mitigation, but it needs to be done with an understanding of what the peat contains. Our Pastronauts provided that understanding.
