Where can we dig?
This year, DigVentures is running excavations at some very special sites across the UK. You can find out more about which ones we’ll be running DigCamps at, and the kind of archaeology you can expect to find there by clicking the links below. We’ll be announcing more DigCamps soon!
- SOLD OUT Saturday 22nd July 2017 – DigCamp at Anglo-Saxon Lindisfarne (Northumberland)
- Saturday 19th August 2017 – DigCamp at Elmswell Farm (Yorkshire)
You can also choose ‘Gift Certificate’ from the dropdown menu if you’d like the option to choose later. Your DigCamp Gift Certificate will be valid on any DigCamp within one year from purchase, and there’ll certainly be plenty to choose from!
How do I book?
Just choose your site from the dropdown menu, and then choose how many people are coming, and then add to your cart. Simples!
What will we be doing?
You really do get to be an archaeologist for the day! There are no sand pits or simulations at DigCamp – it’s all real archaeology.
We start every DigCamp by exploring the site – looking for the places where people once hunted, fished or built their homes. We then show you how to identify artefacts, and you’ll get to help the archaeologists work out what some of the more mysterious artefacts are. And then the real fun begins… We show you how to dig!
Once you’re all trained up on how to use a trowel, and what to look for, you’ll jump into the trenches alongside our professional archaeologists. Will you discover an ancient hunting tool? The remains of a fire? Or the final clue that helps us unlock the mystery of the whereabouts of an Anglo-Saxon chapel? Whatever you find, our archaeologists will help you work out what it was used for and how old it is.
Of course, archaeology isn’t just about digging, and some of the DigCamps will also have other archaeological activities you can do too – like getting up close and personal with some of the finds in the cleaning lab, or trying out the environmental sampling machine!
At the end of the day, you will receive a special DigVentures junior archaeologist activity box, with games, activities and ideas for follow-up fun.
Who is DigCamp suitable for?
Is your child fascinated by archaeology? Have you always wanted to try it, but never had the time? Or do you just want to get out and about and spend a day doing something new and active with your family? If the answer to any of these questions is yes, then DigCamp is for you!
DigCamp is suitable for children ages 6 – 11, and adults of any age (as long as they can get in the trench with their child).
Older children (ages 12 – 16) are welcome to join our main dig, as long as they are accompanied at all times by a parent who is also a registered digger.
Who will we be digging with?
As well as other DigCampers, you will be digging alongside DigVentures’ professional archaeologists, and Fergus – the world’s best archaeological dog!
Our groups are small and friendly, and places are limited to make sure that each DigCamp is a unique experience and that you get the full attention of our team. It’s best to book early to avoid disappointment.
What’s the schedule like?
Each DigCamp usually runs from 10:00am – 4:00pm, but please check the individual DigCamp page for specific details.
What do the costs cover?
The costs cover all tuition and archaeology sessions, the junior archaeology box and light refreshments for one adult and child team. You can add an additional family member for an extra £10.
Please note that the costs do not include lunch. As we are often a fair way from the nearest village, please make sure you come prepared and bring a packed lunch with you.
What should we bring?
Please check the individual DigCamp pages for full details, but generally speaking you will need to bring a packed lunch and appropriate clothing… oh, and bags of enthusiasm!
