Up close and personal, it wasn’t hard to see that our on-site Venturers were having a whale of a time mucking in with the team…
But how our dig was playing out with our digital venturers – those kind enough to support our project, but only able to watch from afar – was something of a mystery to us, at least until they all started to write in with words of encouragement and thanks. Take this from Cool Beans Margaret Massey – inspired not just to thank the team – but do write a poem: an ‘Ode to Flag Fen Lives‘….
“I would just like to thank all the team for a fantastic dig and all the hard “behind the scenes” work you have done to keep the project on line and to keep us informed via the videos. I have learnt a lot on the various archaeological techniques and recording in relation to this type of site and I am sure other’s have to. After seeing them opened on the first video, how sad to see the trenches and test pits being filled in…….but a very successful dig for Flag Fen. I hope to come down next year to take part in the actual digging now……so well done everyone, and in true Bardic fashion and recorded for posterity, here is my ‘Ode to Flag Fen Lives’!”
FLAG FEN LIVES – 2012
History surfaces through the depths of time
And as in the past, should be put to rhyme
Ancestral secrets, our past unfurled
From beneath our feet, but now part of this world
The Bronze Age people of Fen and Wold
Lives they lived that can now be retold
Flint Shards and Bone, Pottery and Post
Round House and Ditch, what features the most ?
Warriors, farmers, women and men
Children and animals who lived in the Fen
Fighting, harvesting, raising their sheep
Building fences and weaving their baskets, so deep
Ancient wood lying below layers of peat
Preserved until now, beneath our feet
Was this dry land that flooded one day
Or were they building a road or a planned causeway ?
Archaeologists, Dig Venturers and a little Dog too
Have made this all possible so the whole world can view
The secrets uncovered and it’s purpose revealed
With finds recorded, preserved now and sealed
“Flag Fen Lives” has been a success
Glasses are raised so let’s call in the press
But the work has not ended, preservation is clear
So we must raise some more funds, to dig again next year !
Cheers to everyone, what a fantastic Dig Adventure…….
